Would it be extremely hard to to reduce the minimum distance to the monitor to, say, 20 cm? The calculator is not really useful for me right now - i tried doubling the monitor distance and also the monitor size, but I'm not sure the calculations are correct anymore.

I assume you are talking about the FOV calculator on this website?

It wouldn't be "extremely hard to reduce the minimum distance to the monitor to, say, 20 cm" but I can't see a practical use for it beyond a homebrewed VR setup. With a screen at 20cm from my eyes my FOV is limited considerably.

Before I consider doing anything with regard to changing the minimum distance limits on the FOV calc, I would ask if you could provide a photo of you and your rig with your head 20cm from the monitor with the size and aspect ratio of the monitor you are using....

Thanks

Um...how do i provide a photo? I can only upload an avatar. It will also be crappy phone photo in extremely messy house.

Its 21 inch monitor, 1680x1050, 16x10 aspect ratio I think... I turn it on only when simracing. It swivels from the side, over my steering wheel, and goes in front of it. Lower bezel is 25 cm from the steering wheel center, and the screen is about 30 cm from my eyes. I can go closer, but i see the pixels. At that point, the fov is around 55 vertical, at least according to an iracing calculator i found.

You could always upload the picture to your own webspace or an image service and link to it (once you have run the hoover around ;))!

Your distance can't be shared by many and so I'm not going to change my FOV calculator for this reason.

If it helps though I have done the maths for you and at the 16:9 (1680x1050) aspect 21" monitor at 30cm from eyes to screen:
vFOV = ~46° (e.g. Assetto Corsa)
hFOV = ~75° (e.g. Project Cars)

Cheers

Thank you...that is the same number I get if i just double the values, using 42 inch monitor 60 cm from my eyes, and the same number I was using before...

Unfortunately, it appears your calculations are wrong... using that calculator http://www.edracing.com/edr/FOV.php
I get 75.5 hFOV - that is correct. But for vFOV it gives me 51.59.

Then I came up with a roundabout way to use the triple screen ingame calculator for Assetto Corsa to calculate my fov - and I also got exactly 51.5.

Seems there is some error somewhere?

No problem, for whatever reason I have been working on a 16:9 21" monitor not a 16:10 as you did actually state in you post.

I stand (almost) corrected... for a 16:10 that measures exactly 21" corner to corner inside the viewable area....

The hFOV = ~74° and the vFOV = 50.31°, so not quite the same as your calculations.

Can you give me the exact screen width and height and ensure that the screen is dead on 21" corner to corner so I can double check what I'm doing.

Thanks.

So, I don't have an inches ruler, but the exact measures in centimeters are: 54,5 cm diagonal, 29 cm height, 46,7 cm width - 21,4 inches diagonal, 11,4 height, 18,4 width according to the converter.

Hm, so that is maybe 21,5 inch monitor? And I also for some reason used 16:9... if i use 43 inch monitor 16:10 60 cm from my eyes, I get the right number, 51,54.

I didn't know that monitors come in such specific sizes tho... I don't use inches neither.
